The classic tale of an aging toymaker and his puppet, Pinocchio, takes on new meaning in this new musical, with songs by Stephen Schwartz of Wicked fame, and based on the touching Disney film! Join the Blue Fairy, Stromboli, and a lively cast of characters, as Geppetto journeys beyond the toyshop to discover what makes the “perfect child”. This lovely family musical, a magical mix of heart-warming fairytale and action-packed adventure, is a perfect fit for family audiences. Everyone will love following Pinocchio’s journey from awkward puppet to real live boy, and will be charmed by Geppetto’s transformation from tyrannical creator to real live father. 75 minutes. (G)

Are your children fascinated by a particular animal or all animals in general?  Find your favourite animals, where and how they live, the latest news about them and who’s filming them right now.  Marvel at the stealth of a snow leopard, the tenderness of a mother tiger and the awesome spectacle of a golden eagle in flight.  Listen to the thrilling sound of lions roaring across the savannah and to birds that mimic machinery.  The BBC website has 569 animals listed!   Learn something new!

Our resource centre has many animal-themed kits available for lending.   Kits include a monkey kit, a bear kit, a forest animal kit, a jungle animal kit, etc.  Kits are comprised of puppets, games, books, activity ideas, music, toys, etc.    More information on lending is available here.

cloud watching

Science

  • Lie down on the lawn and watch clouds.  Make up stories about what you see.  Try it again at night on a blanket, and gaze at the stars or watch in style in a hammock.
  • Find big garden pots or a little piece of land to show children how to plant a garden.  Remember to water it.
  • Borrow (available in our ECE Resource Library) or buy a bug kit and go on a bug safari.
  • Ask children to collect leaves, flowers or clover, and help them iron the items between two pieces of wax paper.
  • Feed the ducks or birds at the park.
  • With yard sale buckets in hand, spend time together gathering rocks, leaves, and outdoor goodies.  Return home to sort them in different shapes and sizes.
  • Create a time capsule at the beginning of the summer by filling an empty chip can or shoe box with drawings or written wishes of summer activities your children want to do.  Open it late August and have fun remembering the highlights of those summer activities.
  • Plan a visit to the library once a week to stock up on summer reading material.

Help your child get ahead at home with these tips to help teach time:

·        Model time-related vocabulary, such as ‘minutes’ or ‘o’clock’

·        Sing songs about time, such as ‘Hickory Dickory Dock’, and make up rhymes to help your child remember ways of telling the time

·        Make a clock with your child and decorate it with images of things which happen at particular times

·        Use toy clocks with moveable hands and play time games with your child

·        Try using sand-timers and sun-dials to show your child other time-keeping devices

·        Ask them time-related questions involving reading the clock and estimating. This will keep them thinking about time

·        Try giving them a watch to wear; it will familiarize them with the clock face and encourage independent learning.

We’ve gone a step further and created two kits that our members can borrow to help teach your children to tell time – “Clockworks” for your preschoolers and “Telling Time” for your school-aged children.

bath

Bath time should be a big adventure.  A good soak should soothe, refresh, and renew.  It is great for a child who is suffering from silly behaviour, impatience, sibling quarrels, temper, resentment, and grumpiness to name a few.  Ensure that the child has lots of bath toys to play with, and you’ll likely have a happier child!

Try rubber duck families and water toys that scoop, fill, dump, and pour.

By now, your child is wrinkled, withered and puckered from playing so long in the tub.  He’s clean and happy and ready for bed.  Bath toys are available in our toy library – come in and see for yourself!
